Latex and nitrile gloves are more widely used than people sometimes imagine. While doctors and dentists are expected to use them all the time, there are other industries, sectors and roles that demand the use of disposable gloves on a daily basis.
Latex gloves are incredibly useful hygiene products but it’s wise to have a stock of nitrile gloves too because latex allergies are fairly common. So who other than dentists and doctors need to be provided with disposable gloves so they can do their jobs properly?
Vets
Vets obviously need to uphold really high standards of hygiene in the interests of their own safety. When they examine animals, it’s important that they do so with their hands protected by disposable gloves. To keep pets safe they must use different gloves for every new patient they examine or treat and this means maintaining a healthy stock of gloves in the surgery.
Cleaners
Cleaners also need to keep themselves safe by covering their hands. Since they regularly work with abrasive chemicals and irritants, they don’t want to do their skin any harm. Disposable gloves provide the perfect barrier. They also prevent cleaners having to touch surfaces with their bare hands.
Hairdressers
It’s not only cleaners who work with harsh chemicals. Hairdressers do too. Although they may be able to cut hair with their bare hands, performing tasks like colouring involves the use of dyes and other chemicals that are best kept off the skin. Latex and nitrile gloves allow them to retain the dexterity of their hands while they work.
Kitchen staff
Kitchen staff also need to retain the dexterity of their fingers when they perform tasks around the kitchen and don’t want to get substances on their hands. Disposable gloves come in handy for them too.
Other medical types
In medical circles, there are far more people to consider than doctors and dentists. Nurses and other members of staff also need access to gloves. Then there are private practitioners operating in various fields in their own clinics, from physiotherapists to chiropodists. If their work means coming into contact with different patients then they have to protect themselves and the people that come to see them adequately.
Lab technicians
Lab technicians and people who work in forensic science often have a dual reason for wearing disposable gloves while performing certain tasks. It’s definitely the case that they want to prevent contact between their skin and the substances they are handling but they are not just motivated by protecting their hands. They also want to prevent contamination of samples and so on.
